*Rx of dry cough: Antitussives (Codeine, Dextromethorphan,
Noscapine)
* Rx of wet cough: Expectorants (Guaifenasin, KI)
Mucolytics:
Acetylcysteine, Bromhexine, Ambroxol
*ANTI TUSSIVES
Suppress cough by acting on CNS or inhibiting cough impulses in
respiratory tract
They should be used only for dry cough which include central
acting drugs like Opioids (Codeine, Pholcodeine, Noscapine).
Diphenhydramine, Dextromethorphan & Peripheral acting drugs
like Cromolyn, Local anesthetics (Lidocaine, Bupivicaine),
Moguistine
*Codeine is for mild to moderate cough.
* MC opioid side effect is
constipation. Dextromethorphan is less potent opioid used for
mild cough with less side effects
► Diphenhydramine is an antihistaminic. Sedation & anticholinergic side effects
*Mucolytics & Ambroxol causes depolymerization of
mucopolysaccharide making the mucus less viscid
